National Chip Week; as if we need an excuse to eat chips…..

This week is National Chip Week! (who knew?!)   The coastline of Suffolk is celebrated for its fish and chip shops but the only current Suffolk recipient of the Fish and Chips Quality Award, created to raise standards in the industry, couldn’t be further from the sea.  The Codfather in Sudbury was inspected and found to be compliant in over 200 categories including quality and service.  Yunus Aslan, owner of the amusingly named take-away and restaurant, explained to me what had earned them the award.  “Our place is special because we do everything with great care.  The potatoes for our chips are Maris pipers from local farmer Rob Dennison and I personally buy the fish daily at Billingsgate market so it is fresher than anywhere I know”. 

The popular eatery also has a wet fish fridge where customers can pick out the fish of their choice (of which there is a larger than usual variety) and have it prepared to eat in or take away, either in traditional batter or on the charcoal grill for the more health conscious patron.  Yunus also caters for those whose diets are restricted by allergies by offering gluten free batter on Sundays from noon to 5pm.
